Almanach 1915 (2018-21)
This project brings together two distinct timeframes: a journey during which my mother and I visited Afyonkarahisar and Burdur—cities our ancestors fled in 1915 during the Armenian Genocide perpetrated by the Young Turks—and the calendar timeline, frozen at that fateful date. Photographs from this trip to Turkey, where denial of the genocide persists, are sewn onto French postal almanacs using red wool purchased in Armenia but originating from Turkey. By linking these different times and territories that inhabit my memory and constitute a part of my identity, I seek my place within the personal and collective narrative. Here, it is a happy memory that covers and haunts a traumatic past. Archives, photographs, almanacs, and redacted memories coexist in the same space—a place of memory, of forgetting, and of haunting.
